Past Life - Keith May 2005

I haven't heard that laugh in sometime

I recall it followed those words (so cruel)

Oh here we are now, but not as two

You and me, the bar and your new fool

Lord have mercy there's someone alive who can say

You're their angel.

Lord have mercy I can't believe

you're out there doing your thing to another boy filled with blind joy.

I don't care much for lighting the way

For some other boy who hasn't had his day

My conscience tells me to step right in

To stop this child from suffering

If I pretend not to see you,

Would you do the same? We'll call it a truce.

Time's healed nothing but these old eyes

And what I see is such a surprise

Lord have mercy there's someone alive who can say

You're their angel.

Lord have mercy I can't believe

you're out there doing your thing to another boy filled with blind joy.

I've seen this before in a past life.

This song is the spirtual succesor to the song "Shutdown", which I play live at every show.  The lyrics tell the tale of a jilted lover who hears a familiar sound in his local pub and finds himself watching another fool travel down a familiar path.

The song came very late to me in the making of the CD and I actually ended up finishing the mix 5 minutes before I shipped the master to the factory.  I wanted to keep the recording pretty sparse and almost give the vibe of a bar where the crowd is starting to thin. Simple..Bluesy..Deliciousness.
