Greek - Keith May 2004

As far back as I can remember, they've always washed up here

with their golden spears and their silver tongues.

Countless hours of rest interrupted by their chants and yells

Oh the things they said, never bode them well

But it's been so long…

Since I felt the need to be brave and strong

And I watch for them to draw near

But I've never seen a happy face, only those filled with fear

(I know fear)

I'm sure the books are told with epic battles, filled with scarlet

Glorifying those whose deaths were valiant

But no matter if they were a Titan or a chosen son,

The end was quick and quiet, recorded by no one.

By the fire here all alone

No sound of sails or the slipping of the stones

Under their feet as they try

To stay brave but, I've seen those eyes

(One thousand times)

The music for this was written in Chuck Bechard's backyard as I was doodling with my guitar.  Later in the week, I decided I needed to take a "mental health day" off and told Heather I would drive her to work. As I was waiting for her to get ready, I was playing the song on my guitar.  When she came down I said, "Oh my god, I wrote a country and western campfire song!" Heather didn't agree.  On the way to her job, she put in her beloved Leonard Cohen Essentials CD.  I still had that guitar melody in my head and wasn't paying attention to Leonard, when I heard him say something about a monster. Oddly enough, I got a vision of a lonely Greek monster sitting by a fire and I couldn't wait to get home and write about it.  I think the lyrics are the best I've ever written.

I feel this may be the best sounding mix on the CD.  The playing is gentle and fits the mood perfectly. Big thanks to James and Jon for thier brilliant contributions.
