Captured - Keith May 2005

Down from the sky, I watch you fly
We're both caught in this summer distraction
You're nature's best, you've passed my test
So soon you'll meet your conclusion

July breeze, covers me, and my new best friend
Next to the fleas, is where you'll sleep
forever....

Where to start? Taking life. Giving art.
In my hands you'll be a Picasso
In your still, a life fulfilled
One color to create the illusion

Deep dark blue, covers every cell of you.
It's you I see, shining right back at me
and I'm "captured".

When I was 7 we moved to a suburb of Toledo called Waterville. It was early in its transformation from farm land to suburb and there were bugs everywhere. Like most young boys, I was facinated by them.  I even had a collection I called my "Blue Bug Box".  Here is where the story takes a turn for the strange........    When I found an insect I'd never seen before, I'd spray paint it blue and pin it to the burlap covered foam board that held the rest of the "collection".  Science and art together at last! I remember taking the Blue Bug Box into show and tell and getting a pleasant note from my teacher that concluded with the words "How strange". (You may be asking yourself,"Why was it called the 'Blue Bug Box' when there was no box?" My response would be, not to try to get logic from the kid spray painting bugs.)

The idea for making this song had been around for a long time and I never seemed to have complete words for it.  I never thought it would make it on the CD.  I could just never put it all together.  Then one spring Saturday morning everything came together and by the evening I had a complete song.  The crickets at the end were the final touch and the fact that they are perfectly on the offbeat was a completely unintentional happy accident.  The song adds some boogie to the disk and can be best appriciated with a good pair of headphones on.
